Pretty Pink Flowers Scarf

I am just loving this scarf.  If you are a fast crocheter, wouldn't this make a great Valentine's gift?  Or if it takes you a bit longer to finish a project, how about a Mother's Day gift?  This pattern works up very quickly.

So, on with it.  Yarn.  I used one skein of Red Heart super saver yarn (7 oz./364 yds.) and made this scarf and a coordinating hat which I will post next week.

Use hook J.

Chain 24.
R1 . Sc in second stitch from hook and each stitch across. (23 sc)
R2.  Ch 4, turn.  Skip first st, tr in next 6 st's.  Ch 4,* yarn over twice, insert hook in 4'th ch from hook, draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through two loops on hook, yarn over and draw through two loops on hook*, repeat once. (3 loops remain on hook).  Skip next two st's, *yarn over twice and insert hook in next st,, draw up a loop. Yarn over and draw through two loops on hook, yarn over and draw throug two loops on hook*, repeat twice more (6 loops remain on hook).  Skip next three st's, repeat between second set *, 9 loops remain on hook.  Yarn over and draw through all 9 loops.  Ch 4, repeat between first set of *, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.  Skip next two st's, tr in next st and in remaining 6 st's.
R3.  Ch 4 ,turn. skip first st, tr in next 6 st's.  Ch 2, [ *yarn over twice and insert hook into middle of flower started on previous row, draw up a loop. Yarn over and draw through two loops on hook, yarn over and draw through two loops on hook*, repeat 2 more times. (4 loops remain on hook) Yarn over and draw through all 4 loops.] Ch 3.  Repeat between brackets.  Ch 2, tr in next st and in remaining 6 st's.
R4.  Ch 3, turn.  Skip first st, dc in next 6 st's. Sc 2 in ch 2 space, 1 sc in tip of petal, 3 sc in ch 3 space, 1 sc in tip of petal, 2 sc in ch 2 sp.  Dc in next 7 st's.
Repeat R2-4 until scarf is nearly 5' long, about 26 times.
Repeat R2.
Repeat R3.
Final Row.  Ch 1, turn. Skip first st and sc in each remaining st and ch space for a total of 23 sc.
Fringe.  Cut 46-47 pieces of yarn about 10" long. To make fringe, fold one piece of yarn in half, draw hook through st, catch loop of yarn and pull through stitch.  Then pull the two ends of yarn piece (opposite of loop side) through loop and pull tight.  Repeat in each st on both ends of the scarf. Trim ends of fringe even if needed.  (I let my starting and ending piece of yarn be part of the fringe and pulled it through the loop along with the fringe.)

And there you have it!  It's really not as difficult as it sounds, it's actually very easy once you work a flower and can see what you are doing.  If you get stuck, let me know and I will try to help.

One more picture just because I love this scarf so much. :)

    3. Try highlighting the word part (and picture if you want it) then print by going to file, print and when the printer selection thing shows up click on selection and your printer should only print what you highlighted, not the background. Worked for me.

IF YOU HIGHLIGHT PATTERN AND COPY AND PASTE IT TO WORD DOCUMENT.
IT IS EASY TO READ NO BACKGROUND.
I DO THIS WITH ALL THE PATTERNS,THAT WAY YOU CAN ALTER THE PATTERN IF YOU WANT AND STILL HAVE A COPY OF ORIGINAL.

    6. If you have a problem with background, just copy and paste in a document in your pc's office program then print it out. I do this with all free patterns I download because I have problems with my eye sight and I can choose a font and font size that is easier on my eyes.

I'm anxious to try the pattern! Looks like a perfect scarf for nicer weather but still needing a scarf or to wear at church when the air conditioning is on. :D

Sorry you had a complaint on your FREE pattern. Rather nervy!

Thanks again. Have a great day.

    1. The hat pattern is already posted! Just click forward through the blog-it's the pattern following this one. Also, I don't have children so I don't know what the dimensions of a children's scarf should be. If you can share the dimensions, I would be happy to try to come up with a children's version.

    3. For the lady who wants to make a child's version I'll share my trick: Try using baby yarn or sock weight yarn and an E or F hook. That will make the scarf narrower. To make it shorter just stop making repeat rows of flowers when you have the length you want.

It took me a few times to figure it out, but after you pull through all nine loops, I'm pretty sure you left out another petal on the scarf, after I did it with your pattern I ended up with five petals, but I added a ch 4 treb into fourth chain from hook pull through two and pull through two and repeat once, then I continued onto the skip two st and treb into next 7 st. HOPE THIS HELPS!!

  13. or you can lower the treb to doub. and doub to single and singles to slip st???? that may help too, or cut it down from 7 treb on each side of flowers to 4 or 5 that would make the beginning a chain of 18 or 20

  15. Pretty scarf I am ready to work on but cant figure out the directions. I do not understand how you are increasing the number of loops on the hook by yarning over and drawing through. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Lovely scarf.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm assuming you are referring to the petal part. The petals are a set of uncompleted triple crochet stitches that are worked together. Also, notice that some of the yarn overs are "yarn over twice". Work it slowly, step by step, until you get the feel for what the pattern is doing and I think it will make sense to you. I hope this helps, let me know if it doesn't.

  16. Thank you for so promptly helping me. It did help. Maybe I am just dense but still on round 2 after you have 6 loops what does "repeat between second set mean? You have no idea how much I appreciate your help. I make scarfs for my 3 granddaughters and just know they would love this one so I am still trying to figure it out. Thank you for sharing your creative genius with the rest of us!!!

    1. Repeat between the second set of stars (*). I know, it's a lot of repeating and it gets a little gnarly in there, but just keep taking it step by step and you will start to see the pattern emerge and then it will all make more sense. And stay tune, I'm working on a super cute idea for a summer scarf!

I have tried and it's just not working out right. I get lost in all the yarn overs an I never have the same stitches left on my hook that I should. *PLEASE HELP*

    ReplyDelete
  18. Sorry, no videos. :( I know it can be a little confusing, even I get a little lost in it if I rush and I wrote it! All I know to tell you is to take it move by move and it should start to make sense. Also, for the sake of time and space, I wrote it with the "repeat between the *", but you could try writing it out step by step without the repeats and that might help you. I hope you can get it, it really is a fun and easy pattern once it makes sense!

  22. This is such a beautiful scarf. But I am confused. On R2. when 6 loops remain on hook "skip next three stitches, repeat between second set..." I don't understand that. Please help. I really want to crochet this scarf and I am not a beginner. Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Hello. 6 loops remain on hook, skip the next 3 stitches, repeat the stitches between the second set of *'s-which would be *yarn over twice and insert hook in next st,, draw up a loop. Yarn over and draw through two loops on hook, yarn over and draw throug two loops on hook* I know the repeats can be a little confusing-you may want to try writing it out without the repeats-I would have done it that way but the pattern would have gotten very looong! Basically, to create the petals, you are working sets of triple crochet together. Hope this helps!

  24. Dear Sheila, love this scarf and want to give it to Relay for Life event for ACS BUT confused, more than one person has tried. Following the directions I end up with 2 tr posts then 3 tr posts then 3 tr posts. now I have 3 pedals. then it says chain 4 and repeat. If you mean repeat the flower part, where to you repeat it as I have only 5 stitches left to the end of the row? Please help, thanks, Emma Senger

    ReplyDelete
  25. Repeat between the first set of *'s,(yarn over twice, insert hook in 4'th ch from hook, draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through two loops on hook, yarn over and draw through two loops on hook*, repeat once. (3 loops remain on hook). The first row of petals makes 4 petals, the last petal will sort of "float" between the 3'rd petal and the following tr stitches. I know this pattern isn't the easiest to read, it was a tough one to write! If that doesn't help feel free to let me know.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Sheila, still confused. If I start with 24 chain, sc in second from hook ending with 23sc chain 4 turn, sk 1 st and tr in next 6 (have used 7) yo twice inserting hook in fth from hook (now used 11) after 2 tr here, skip 2 sts and 3 tr in next (now used 14) skip 3 sts doing 3 tr in next st (have now used 18)ch 4.... since I only have 5 chains to work with to the end of row 2 STILL NOT CLEAR ON WHERE YOUR REPEAT BETWEEN THE FIRST SET COMES IN??? Appreciate you help. Emma Senger

    ReplyDelete
  27. I'm not sure exactly what you are doing. When you work the first petal, are you working it in the 4'th stitch from the hook, or are you working it in the 4'th stitch on the previous row? You should be working it in the 4'th stitch from hook, which means that you are working the first petal off of the ch 4 that you just created. In the same manner the 4'th petal in this row is worked off of the ch 4, which is were the repeat between 1'st set of *'s comes in.

    ReplyDelete
  28. got this part but when you say the next next two or three stitches, do you mean the stitches from the tr or the sc from the previous row. so sorry to be such a pain but I really love this pattern and want to go it right. thanks for your patience. Emma Senger

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm not sure I am understanding your question completely. Hopefully this answer will help. When the pattern says to skip x number of stitches, it means to count the number of stitches starting with the one closest to the hook. In the instance where you work chain stitch, count starting with the chain stitch closest to the hook. If you have not worked any chain stitches, count the stitches on the previous row, starting with the one closest to the hook.

  30. Sorry, still not able to get it. Will take these notes to my next Crochet Class and ask two other ladies that tried to follow the directions to try again. Will let you know if we can figure it out from your notes. Thank you for your help. Emma Senger

  31. I think my problem is I am left handed. Would the directions be different for a left hander? thanks, Emma

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Pretty sure the problem is not that you are left handed. Unless the problem is that you have problems with patterns written by left handers. I'm left handed too! :) I know it's a knotty pattern to read at first, just take it slow stitch by slow stitch until you get the feel for what is going on. After that, easy peasy. Hope it will work for you.

  32. Thank you so much for your encouragement Sheila. I did what you said slow..slow...slow and finally got it. Once I looked at the yarn overs as TR and st's as in the chain or SC from the previous row. It all came together. I am almost finished and excited to donate it to Relay for Life ACS upcoming Event. You are amazing. Emma Senger

      Delete
    3. Keep trying. :) It really is simple once you realize what is going on. Hopefully someday I will find the time to write it out without the repeats. In the meantime, it may be helpful to you to try writing it out for yourself, step by step, without the repeats.

  35. Has the pattern had the added part posted by a user - I ask because I am only getting 4 petals. I have been 2 days figuring this pattern out - I am a newbie but wrote the pattern out without the *'s.

But need to know if this was already added to posted pattern:

It took me a few times to figure it out, but after you pull through all nine loops, I'm pretty sure you left out another petal on the scarf, after I did it with your pattern I ended up with five petals, but I added a ch 4 treb into fourth chain from hook pull through two and pull through two and repeat once, then I continued onto the skip two st and treb into next 7 st. 1. Hi Deb, the pattern has been updated. On the first row of the flower, (row 2) you will get 4 petals. On the next row of the flower (row 3) you will make the remaining 2 petals for a total of 5 petals in the flower. The petals are made up of 3 treble crochet worked together-hopefully that will help make sense of all the yarn overs and remaining loops etc. (when it says chain 4, the chain is acting as the first treble crochet) I have thought of trying to add some pictures of the flower steps but not sure when it will happen, there just isn't enough of me to go all the way around right now. :(

  36. Just as a side note- if no one is able to post a video of this pattern - would it be possible to post a picture of each step of the petal? that in itself would be so helpful so we can look at the picture and see if ours is looking the same. I really love this pattern and want to make it as gifts for Christmas.

A plus for using this one to donate-once you get the hang of the pattern it works up really fast and you can also be a little more "sloppy" since it's meant to be a looser stitch.

Also, forget the naysayers ... there are always people out there ready to complain about SOMETHING! Since I believe those kinds of people NEED something to complain about every day in order to be happy -- you can be happy that you were able to make them happy! HA HA HA!!

I started with the three loops on the hook etc. I'm done with looping through all nine on the hook. Now it say to repeat first set of *, yarn over and draw through all three loops. I'm lost here, which * are you referring to and I will be at the end of my 23 chains before I finish the instructions.
Can you send me the pattern on my email address and note where I may be messing up? I also see you have a hat pattern and would love to have it too.

  56. I really love this scarf! For some reason the petals look awkward when I finished it. Can I email a picture to you so maybe you can tell me how I went wrong. I would really appreciate your help. Thanks. Rejoyner@comcast.net

  57. I have just started this scarf. It's gorgeous! Thank you for posting this pattern and I like the way you explain it. I thought it's going to be difficult but it's really easy to do it. Can't wait to try the hat too. Have a beautiful day!

    1. Thanks Helen. It does look tricky at first but it is simple. So glad you are enjoying the pattern. If you are getting a snowstorm like I am today, it's the perfect day to curl up somewhere and work on it. Have fun!

  58. I love this pattern but was wondering if this could be made into a wrap or even an afghan and if so how. Thanks!

    1. Hi, yes, you could turn this into a blanket or wrap. It's basically just a flower tucked in between rows of triple crochet so it would be very easy to make bigger. Just determine how wide you want your piece and how many rows of flowers, then add in however many triple crochets you want in between the flowers. I think I would personally recommend wider sections of the triple crochet for a bigger piece, but that is totally up to you. Hope this helps.

  60. Hopefully you can help. I'm a beginner, but am catching on quickly. I have been crocheting just over a month now. I have fell in love with the picture. And am getting the hang of reading this pattern. This is my first attempt. I've been self teaching myself through YouTube. I have made about 15 rows... So 4 full flowers... Yet, the fourth petal looks like Nemo's "lucky" fin. The first three look beautiful-the ones that you yarn over and pull through 9. But the fourth looks less voluptuous and has a funny space. The fifth and sixth petal look fine, but that fourth petal just looks wrong. I've tried gently tugging it to see if I just had to make it sit pretty... I've tried messing with the tension... And to no avail. Do you have any idea of what might be going wrong?

    1. Hmm, I'm not sure. Is there any chance that you could be forgetting the ch 4 to begin the fourth petal? At the moment that is the only thing I can think of. The fourth petal can look a little odd, but it shouldn't look extremely so.

    2. I think I am just overly criticizing. I tend to be a little bit OCD. It just looks like it isn't as connected to Petal 3 near the base. Like a slipstitch between the two would be perfect, but that would be slightly difficult as your hook would be at the tip of Petal 4. Hmm. I think I will play with it more. It is for my mom, and I think she would be happy no matter what. (:

    3. Maybe it's just a matter of working that chain four a bit tighter. That might help it look a little more anchored. Hope your mom loves it!
